Description

Product description I will ship by EMS or SAL items in stock in Japan. It is approximately 7-14days on delivery date. You wholeheartedly support customers as satisfactory. Thank you for you seeing it. Amazon.com For all intents and purposes, the style of jazz known as hard bop came of age at this February 1954 live date from the famous New York club. By adding vibrant elements of blues, funk, soul, and gospel to the technically challenging and highly cerebral bebop form, hard bop became the dominant jazz style and to this day represents what is typically referred to as mainstream jazz. The lineup here resembles the '27 Yankees of the genre: trumpeter Clifford Brown was quickly becoming the red-hot alternative to Miles Davis's cool stylings (his work on the ballad "Once in a While" is worth the price of admission alone); pianist Horace Silver's driving, urgent sound epitomized the funky hard-bop aesthetic; alto Lou Donaldson and bassist Curly Russell had already graced countless essential recordings between them. From this seed grew three of the greatest hard-bop outfits in history: Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Silver's Quintet, and the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. This short-lived ensemble might have them all licked. For a complete snapshot of the Birdland event, pick up A Night at Birdland, Volume 2, easily on par with Birdland, Volume 1 for sheer artistry. --Marc Greilsamer

While technically not the Jazz Messengers, this ensemble contains one of my favorite line-ups. For the sake of argument I consider this to be "proto-Jazz Messengers" because the music is not fully formed hard bop.The music first. Each of the three Horace Silver compositions - Split Kick, Quicksilver and Mayreh - establish this performance as emergent hard bop. However, Dizzy Gillespie's A Night in Tunisia and Charlie Parker's/J.J. Johnson's Wee Dot are clearly more traditional bop (and the bop tunes add to the intense energy of the performance.) My personal favorite track is Once in a While. Clifford Brown's tone and phrasing were so beautiful they have, on occasion, brought tears to my eyes. And the blues improvisation that closes the album adds a touch of diversity to the music that established the roots of Jazz Messenger music to come. What makes this album special to me is Clifford Brown. I cannot seem to get enough of him. However, this album also introduced me to Lou Donaldson who quickly became of of my favorite alto saxophonists. His rich tone seems to fill the room and his aggressive playing sets each track on fire. The rhythm section is rock solid. Silver as both a composer and virtuoso pianist makes a significant contribution to making this album a classic. Curly Russel's bass provides a grooving bottom. Blakey's incorporation of African drumming techniques (sliding timbre on toms by using his elbow on drum heads and bells and clicks) add yet another dimension to the music. As you listen to this album you begin to think that nobody, including this ensemble, can top the energy and playing. That it may be a fluke performance. If so, wait to you hear A Night At Birdland, Vol. 2 (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition)! Listen to this album first, then get volume 2.
