Long-submerged secrets surface as someone called the Night Bird taunts the pair with cryptic messages pertaining to the deaths. The first chapter of The Night Bird opens up this psychological murder mystery thriller with a bang. Two women returning home from a party get stuck on the Bay Bridge and the inexplicable happens. Witnessed by dozens of drivers, what happened makes no sense to anyone, certainly not to the survivor or to Inspector Frost Easton of the SFPD. What makes the woman’s death even more complicated is that Frost knows of another case very similar to this one. Then he finds another connection, and another. And another.Dr. Francesca “Frankie” Stein is a psychotherapist who helps her patients to overcome their greatest fears by rebooting their memories. It’s controversial, but it works. Based on her studies and their findings, Frankie has worked within the justice system as an expert witness on traumatic memory and memory loss. Frost comes to her after he recognizes a connection between her and the woman on the bridge.Loved the character Frost Easton. He left his law degree behind and became a cop after finding the body of his murdered sister. He’s sharp and polite and humble—definitely a chick magnet. His partner is a cat that goes on calls with him (the litter box is in the back seat). The cat is also his landlord—there’s an interesting story behind that.Frankie is prickly but highly intelligent and her work is her world, which I can appreciate, but it does make her difficult to connect with. And I wish the author hadn’t named her Frankie Stein, though. Ha ha, very funny. The Night Bird moves fast and keeps you guessing. I love to try and figure out the ending but was wrong, wrong, wrong with this book. There was one thing I got right and celebrated that singular accomplishment while shaking my head. It’s suspenseful and parts are just plain creepy. Red herrings and monkey wrenches galore. There are libraries stuffed with serial killer murder mysteries and too many are just not this devious or clever. Of course the answer is in front the reader, but that doesn’t mean it is the right answer.I highly recommend this book for mystery readers who want to be kept guessing. This is a two book series that I will definitely follow as well as look into the author’s other mystery series.Enjoy.
