My interest in this soundtrack was piqued while watching Good Night, and Good Luck (Widescreen Edition). I had heard of Ms. Reeves, but owned none of her albums. Out of curiosity I checked out the album and was pleased to discover that the track list contained some of my favorite standards (there are no duds in my opinion), plus a catchy little tune I had never heard before ("TV Is The Thing This Year"). The deal was sealed when I saw that Jeff Hamilton - one of my drumming idols - was in the combo that backed Ms. Reeves on the entire soundtrack. Those who are familiar with the songs comprising the tracks on the album will note that Ms. Reeves favors slower tempos on the album, reminding me of Shirley Horn, and she is backed by a tight combo that perfectly supports her vocals: Matt Catingub on saxophone, Peter Martin on piano, Jeff Hamilton on drums, and Christoph Luty on bass. Each track is a pleasure to listen to, and the entire album occupies one of my most played playlists on my MP3 player. While it is presumptuous to claim one song is better than another, I will list my favorites and why: "You're Driving Me Crazy" is one I enjoy because it is not only one of the few uptempo tracks, but Jeff Hamilton's brush intro is amazing. "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall" grabbed me because of the way Ms. Reeves handled the melody, and her rendition of "Solitude" has quickly become my second favorite (behind Billie Holiday's rendition.)If you love the standards - and those who do will immediately recognize almost every song in the track list - this is a must-have album. It deserved the 2006 Grammy it won and made me a loyal fan of Ms. Reeves.
