Description

Turner Classic Movies and Universal are proud to present THE NIGHT WALKER AND DARK INTRUDER: HORROR DOUBLE FEATURE. The name Universal has long been synonymous with the horror genre, starting with famous monster movies of the 1930s and continuing through to contemporary films. While many of these movies feature supernatural elements, they also share a penchant for moody atmosphere and suspense that slowly draw viewers into the mystery until the final terrifying reveal. Included in this collection are two films that showcase not only these horrific thrills, but also such stars as Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Taylor and Leslie Nielsen. The Night Walker Dreams have been a recurring theme in film from its earliest years, but in director William Castle's hands the question of what dreams mean becomes a terrifying story of the line between fantasy and reality in The Night Walker (1964). Barbara Stanwyck, in her final feature film, stars as a woman haunted by dreams of an imaginary lover dreams that increase in intensity after her husband dies. Robert Taylor co-stars as the attorney determined to help her solve the mystery. Dark Intruder While most famous for his later work in comedy, Leslie Nielsen had a long career as a leading man in a variety of genres, including horror. Dark Intruder (1965) stars Nielsen as an Occult expert who is brought in by police to help solve a series of murders in which a mystical statue is left at each crime scene. Nielsen is on the case, until he discovers the mysterious connection between the victims in this gothic horror tale.

Originally purchased this DVD to watch "Dark Intruder," highly recommended by a friend. "Dark Intruder" is well-done, atmospheric, and entertaining, with some Lovecraftian motifs thrown in for good measure; my understanding is that it was a pilot for a series that was never made. The real surprise in this double-movie DVD was "Night Walker," a real gem of suspenseful ambiguity (Barbara Stanwyck's last film role, screenplay by Robert Bloch, and also starring Robert Taylor). First DVD ordered was defective; could only view about half of "Night Walker." Returned that copy, purchased a second copy. Believe me, "The Night Walker" was worth all this effort. By the time you reach about mid-point in "The Night Walker," you are on pins and needles trying to figure out what actually happened--the screenplay is so well-written that there are numerous possibilities (natural and supernatural) for the sequence of events. The suspense and ambiguity are maintained right up until the end of the movie. "The Night Walker" is one of those gems that needs to be re-discovered.
