I experienced this book differently from most of my reading. I wasn't very interested in the narrative, and if I were evaluating it strictly for its story I'd be less enthusiastic than I am. It's the creation of the main character Charlie that makes this book so special. It's as though he springs to life from a painting, and other characters are aspects of him. Through Charlie, author Hopes shows us "the soul making the broken whole again." Charlie's night is the darkness of his childhood. His sleep is his unconscious transformation. His dreams of lovers are what he most desires. "Charlie had painted paradise. It was a boy's paradise, where harmony is not prized, but jubilation is." There are poetic revelations and theatrical confrontations. There are conversations with cats. There's also the presence of Asheville, sometimes important and sometimes shadowy, another "character" with light and dark resonance. Like other works of fine art, this book provides many points of entry for readers with open hearts and discerning minds.
