n 1992 Billy Crystal decided to do something in his career that he had never done before. He decided to try directing a movie, the movie he chose to do was called “Mr. Saturday Night”.“Mr. Saturday Night” is the story of Buddy Young Jr, a character that Billy Crystal created for a special called “Don’t Get Me Started” and he also performed the character on SNL during his stint as a player on the show. Buddy Young Jr is a comedian who made it big by having his own show on network television in the 1950’s around the time of the golden age of television and shows like “Your Show of Shows” ruled the airwaves. The movie starts off in the present which at the time of the movie was 1992 and travels back and forth between Buddy’s childhood and career and the present. Accompanying Buddy throughout his childhood and career is his brother Stan who is played by David Paymer who also was in City Slickers with Billy Crystal and his role in this film earned an Oscar nomination. Now life is not all sunshine and roses for Buddy because he could be sliding into retirement along with his wife played by Julie Warner but instead he is obsessed with keeping his career going and in the process of doing this he manages to alienate his brother Stan and anyone who doesn’t go along with him. One night his brother Stan, who is also Buddy’s agent , decides to retire and what is Buddy to do but go out and find himself a new agent. This new agent is played by Helen Hunt who when this movie came out she was just about to start doing “Mad About You”. So now the adventures of Buddy trying to bring his career back come into play. You’ll have to watch the rest of the movie to find out what happens. When this film came out it was not a blockbuster hit but nowadays it would be known as an indie film. Watching Crystal play a character that goes from a young man and then into his 70’s is simply movie magic. It is a warm and touching film and also you see some very funny moments in the film as well.It was a very ambitious project for Crystal to do as his first directing gig at bat but he ends up directing some great films such as “Here Today” and “61*” . To me what is great about “Mr. Saturday Night” is a special film and very underappreciated as well. Recently Crystal has turned this film in to a musical on Broadway and as he puts it, He doesn’t need the make up , he is already the age of Buddy Young Jr.When I was 16 I went to see this film at the movies and I must say that it was myself and a friend who were the only 2 people under 50 watching the movie. I am a fan of small films and underrated films , don’t get me wrong , I love my big budget superhero pictures and what not , but it is the smaller films that are really worth it because these are people that put their heart and soul in to the film you are watching . I highly recommend this film if you like old Hollywood and the golden age of those days or just a Billy Crystal fan .
