Friday Night Knitting Club is by Kate Jacobs. This book looks at the relationships of women with different likes and dislikes and from different economic and social circles who get together through a knit shop and a knitting circle and become family. It also explores the tragedy of ovarian cancer and single parenthood due to out-of-wedlock babies and its effect on friends and family.Georgia had been in love with James but their race came between them. James, for some reason wouldn’t take her to meet his parents. She became pregnant and had her daughter Dakota. James left her for someone else leaving Georgia to bring up Dakota as a single parent. With the help of a stranger, Anita, Georgia began making her living knitting clothing. This proceeded to expand to her having a shop, Weaver and Daughter. Their apartment was above the store. Gradually, she hired Peri and Anita would help out in the afternoon. One day, they began a knitting club and Lucie came. Darwin came at first to write her thesis about women knitting as the basis of understanding all women through knitting. Darwin’s husband was in California doing his residency. Things were going along swimmingly until three things happened. 1) Dakota turned 13, 2) James came back wanting to finally get to know his daughter, and 3) Cat (aka Cathy or Catherine) once Georgia’s best friend came back into her life. All three things at once really turned Georgia’s life upside down. Could she get her life back on an even keel and in the form she really wanted it to be?As the girls pair up with someone else for their support, all of them came together to support Georgia and Dakota. Did Georgia need their support or did she need James’s?The characters are so real, it seems as if they are your best friends too. As you read, you begin to see their faults and try to make them listen to you; but of course, you can’t. You begin to become involved in their lives and all the bad things that happen seem to get under your skin and become your problems. None of the men in their lives seem to know what is going on either. By this time, you are so engaged in the book that it is impossible to put it down until you finish. Your emotions become so involved with the characters that you find yourself in tears and shouting for joy. The book is remarkable.
